Breathtaking: Guerlain Meteorites Cruel Gardenia

Guerlain Meteorites Cruel Gardenia Illuminating Iridescent Powder. I first saw the photo when I was browsing Temptalia. It was love at first sight. I knew I had to have it! I haven’t tried any Guerlain products before, and I vowed this would be my first.

This limited edition illuminating pressed powder was released the week before Chinese New Year. I was lucky enough to have a friend who picked it up for me, then sent to me right before the break of the festive season. Thank you so much, you know who you are! Many people actually pre-ordered this, so I’m guessing this is already sold out. Yes, I am talking about something you cannot get. Yes, you can shoot me now.

The packaging of Cruel Gardenia feels a little weak. The container is made of plastic and it doesn’t weigh much. I would forewarn you against dropping this thing. I don’t think the content would hold up. It does look like something that breaks easily. It is even lighter than my MAC Mineralised Skinfinish Natural. So, exterior packaging wasn’t a positive for me. However, the inside made up for it. I twisted the cover and opened to see this…

It felt like opening an old treasure box to see the glowing golden treasure. I just sat there and admired the 3D structure of the powder for more than 5 minutes. Seriously. I completely forgot about the lightweight plastic packaging. Here is a close up of the Cruel Gardenia Illuminating Iridescent Powder. *drools*

What do you think? Isn’t it just beautiful? When I snapped back to reality, my first question was: How am I going to use this? It wasn’t a question of application. Rather, ’twas a question of whether I had the heart to even touch it! I braved myself for the first cut. I lightly touched it with my pinky and it felt like a blunt ragged sword slashed through my heart. Goodness, it was unbearable. I knew I had to do it. I finally had the guts to swatch it, so I could take photos for you.

Picture above was taken in natural light; picture below with flash. The swatch on the left was done with my finger. It was only a light swipe but came out intensely shimmery. The swatch on the right was sheered out, the way it is worn on the face. Not so scary anymore, eh? I would say this is a warm pink with a touch of peach. Just a tad. It is shimmery, but when worn as a highlighter, it brings out a subtle shine that does not emphasise pores. The powders are finely milled and there are no chunks of glitter to be found, at all. When worn with a stippling brush all over the face, this powder gives a very natural all over glow that does not add you to a night club decoration. Safe for day light. Don’t have to move to Forks. I have Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick and compared to this, in my opinion, Guerlain wins hands down.

I would have to say this powder suits all skin types, from cool to neutral to warm undertones. The colour is sheer and it glows so beautifully on anyone who wears it. I have been using Cruel Gardenia every day. It wears nearly the whole day for me and is still visible after blotting! I am very happy with this purchase. I have been using it so much that the 3D gardenia doesn’t look as perfect anymore. Oh well, I didn’t pay RM189 just to look at it. I think this will be my daily staple for a long time to come. I even used it for a wash of highlight around my eyes and it works great! It doesn’t cover any of my dark cirlces but it did fake a glow – it gave me artificial sleep. *I’ve been missing on sleeps to get this site up and running*

Did you manage to get this? Do you use illuminating powders to brighten up your face? Let’s share!

I'd shoot you for getting it when I'm flat broke!

Haha! I will do a FOTD but I wonder how well it will show up in amateur photos. Lol!

Darn it! I really wanted this! I was outstation (and still am) when it was released, so I didn't manage to grab it from my usual Guerlain SA/counter in the Gardens. But due to all the hype surounding the item, I went to 3 duty free Guerlain counters trying to find it, from the one in KLIA, Changi Airport and Dubai International, and ALL OF 'EM WAS SOLD OUT!! 🙁

The only consolation for me is that I own the Laura Mercier Rose Rendezvous Illuminator and it supposed to be quite similar but dang it, I still want the Cruel Gardenia!

    • Lily

Yeah I saw the Laura Mercier one in photos. They do look alike! The Laura Mercier one is warmer right?

The LM is more pigmented and has a definitely more pink with gold undertone while the Guerlain is more pink-silver. I managed to test the Guerlain in Dubai and it is less noticeable on my cheeks compared to the LM. I prefer wearing the LM at night as it just gives my face that extra oomphh, but I need neeeed the Guerlain for day as I am getting oh so bored of NARS Albatross and Dior Amber Diamond.

Hah, I see. I hardly go out at night (babysit!) so, I guess I got one that suits me. LOL! I really love this because it gives that glow that none other could. Well, those that I've tried anyway. Definitely my HG highlighter. I wouldn't worry too much about missing this though. I'm sure they'll come out with something new and even better! I've wanted the Amber Diamond for a while, but it's not available anymore. Maybe I'll get it online…

  • mostlysunnybunny

Oh hahaha it's still available in Belgium! I saw it in the shop just yesterday (if anyone wants to do a CP swatch for stuff I can't get here, I might be game)! I gave it a quick swatch but found it a little too shimmery. However I'd like to believe that on face it's not the same thing. I've been falling hard for Guerlain Rouge Automatique, but if/when I do get any it'll also be the first Guerlain item I own! I used to think luxury brand makeup is for older ladies. It's either that they have changed their game or I have… grown older :p

The only highlighter I own at the moment is Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick. I like it but highlighting is a step that I often skip (my brow bones are pretty prominent), so I don't use it enough!

It is swatched very shimmery, but such a lovely shine on the face! Not shimmery at all. Thing is, it doesn't even feel like I'm highlighting at all. I've tried this with different brushes, and they all work just as beautifully. Even when applied all over the face, it only gives the face a glowy dewy effect. You should really try it on! I have pretty prominent cheeks too, but trust me, this is excellent!

*gasp* am kicking myself for not getting this now!

LOL! I'm sure there are many new releases that are just as if not more beautiful!

Gorgeous!!! But for the sake of my $$, I’ve opt for TheBalm Mary Lou-manizer Highlighter recommended in Temptalia. It works great thou!! Can be use to highlight the corner of my eyes, forehead, cheekbones, nose, chins, etc.

    • Lily

I absolutely love TheBalm eyeshadows! I think highlighters are very flattering, only if it’s not too sparkly. The Guerlain one is just a luxury – I was so taken by the gardenia design. It’s stunning to look at.
