Dior Fall 2012 Golden Jungle: Crocodile Leather Effect Nails Review

I have never tried any crackle nail polish before. None of them ever appealed to me. I am hardly a nail enthusiast and I still struggle with messy application sometimes. I was just browsing at the Dior counter end of July (Friday 27th to be exact) and the much awaited Fall Collection was already on display! It was lunch time, so I only had the time to try this nail polish.

This limited edition crackle set is supposed to give you crocodile leather effect nails. I’m no expert in leathers and truthfully, I only had a very vague idea of what crocodile leather looked like until I googled it. The nail polish duo is a set of sparkly gold (148) and dark matte khaki (608). The gold acts as a base and the khaki crackles. The instruction leaflet says to apply a layer of gold first, wait for a minute or two (do not let it dry completely) before applying a thin layer of khaki on top. I am NOT known for following instructions and I do love to experiment, so I went with 2 coats of gold + 1 thin coat of khaki and 2 coats of gold + 1 thick layer of khaki.

Result? If I applied according to instructions, I find that the shape of the crackle is finer, less apparent. Also, I experienced flaking when the polish is applied too thin. When I applied it thicker, the effect on my nails was more to my taste. The colours are bolder and the shape of the crackle more appealing. Each nail crackles differently, and I had an amusing time figuring out what it looks like. In fact, the SAs at Dior and I had a good laugh when one of them looked like turtle shell instead of crocodile! LOL!

Below is a photo to show you all my fingers (except thumbs). My right index finger looks like a spider web in real life. My fave has to be my right ring finger. If you followed me on instagram (@ChloeAsh), I also showed you how my nails look under direct sunlight. The shimmering gold base warms up the khaki very well, and the warmth of gold shines through. Under fluorescent light, the khaki is darker.

This set retails for RM96 and it is already available at your local Dior counters since 1 August. Have you tried or seen this yet? This is my first crackle experience, and it’s been lovely getting all sorts of compliments!

  • I really hoped I would not like it, because I normally do not care about the whole crackle thing, but this is gorgeous! I think the crackle effect is more ‘sophisticated’ and the colour combo is right on! Aaaand another Dior thing onto the wishlist :p.

    • Lily

Yes, the colour combo is very sexy. It looks different in different angles and lighting. Sometimes it looks like rusty bronze, sometimes like golden khaki, very unique and classy. When I applied the khaki colour unevenly, the crackles are more interesting!

  • xin

eeep! your cracks look better than mine!

    • Lily

Lol! I think they’re different every time you apply it! I tried to apply quickly when the polishes are still wet and the effect is also quite interesting.

  • Daphne

Wow, your cracked nails look beautiful..much nicer than my OPI

    • Lily

I saw the OPI crackles before and it didn’t appeal to me at all! This one is definitely a must try. Very unique crackles that give you a different experience each time you apply!

  • Holy crap, that looks amazing! You did an awesome job with those. Dior=chicest crackle polish around. I’ve never tried crackle polish either, but I want to now πŸ™‚

    • Lily

Oh, you should Becca. The best thing about this is you don’t even have to be careful with your application!

  • When I first heard Dior was doing crackle I wanted to curl up and die. I think it an awful trend. Its nice to know however that they managed to get it to look quite classy and that price point is pretty good for 2 polishes πŸ™‚

    • Lily

I know what you mean about first impression. I think it’s value for money and the crackles are really quite classy… indeed πŸ˜‰

  • Sunny @ Mostly Sunny

I have this I have this!!! I’m still not into crackles but this is in my humble opinion one of the must-haves from Golden Jungle! Can’t wait to lay my hands on Golden Savannah either!

    • Lily

Oh, I have to purchase Golden Savannah! I can’t resist any longer. Crackles didn’t appeal to me either but this one is really nicely done. You must try it to believe it πŸ™‚

  • I love that these crackle in more roundish patterns instead of linear like other crackle polishes. I wonder what Dior did differently. Thinking of picking them up!

    • Lily

That’s right! I saw some crackles from other brands that look like tree branches / lightning… didn’t like it at all. This one is really something different. I tried swirling the top layer (khaki) and the crackles came out amazing! LOL!

  • Gin

i saw three posts talking about this today!

    • Lily

      Go get it!!!

  • Lily, this crackle polish is….to-die-for *runs off to nearest Dior counter*

    • Lily

  • Liyeun

Oh dear. I can’t cal myself a Dior fan now since I DO NOT like this. It look good on you, but I cant bring myself to put it on. I just can’t. Did u purchase other things from the Fall collection? Lol

    • Lily

LOL! You don’t have to like everything Dior just to be a fan. There have been some duds before. I’ve never succumbed to the crackle trend, but this one is really different. It’s like major nail art. Hahaha… more Fall collection to come!

  • Oh my,this looks a lot nicer than the OPI ones,i’m so getting this next month if it’s still there πŸ˜›

    • Lily

Yeah, definitely better than the OPI ones. I couldn’t bring myself to buy any of the OPI crackles… +__+”

      • Me too, since i saw this,i think it is 80% more nicer than the OPI ones πŸ˜€

        • Lily

Well, I wouldn’t know how many percent nicer it is… ahahahaha… but yeah, I think I prefer this crackle to those OPI ones.
