Femme Boulevard: Smokey Eyes For Day

I missed the last Femme Boulevard post because I was so busy. I still am, and that’s why you’ve been seeing less regular posts lately. For this FB issue, we decided to go easy on the creativity juice. LOL! We decided to show you how to wear smokey eyes during day time. For me, it’s just a tamer version of the dramatic smokes. I use lighter colours, and the gradient technique and of course, most importantly, blend blend blend!

I’ve been using only concealer and powder for my face the last month or so, and I decided to keep it that way for this post. Smokey eyes do look best with a clean canvas but there’s also an edge if there are freckles showing. I think it makes the whole look a little undone, which I love. For the eyes, I am using Laura Mercier caviar stick in Amethyst as base and 2 different eye shadows – Urban Decay Darkhorse and Urban Decay Toasted from the Naked palette. Of course, black liner and black mascara are essentials.

What I do is apply Amethyst all over my lids, then blend out any harsh edges. The caviar stick does crease if I didn’t apply a powder eye shadow over it, so here, I’m using Urban Decay Toasted all over my lid. With a black pencil, I smudged my lashlines (don’t have to be clean, messy is good) before using Darkhorse to blend over it. I do the same to my lower lash lines – smudge black pencil, then use Darkhorse over it. I finish the look with generous coats of mascara, a neutral blush and a natural lip. For this look, I used Dior Rose Brazilia as blush and YSL Glossy Balm Crystal Colour in Mouthwatering Berry.

Here’s a step by step pictorial, and you can see how the eyes turned out up close.

Here’s the finished look. This technique can be applied using different colours for different effects. I love smokey eyes. I think they look sexy and mysterious in a way 🙂

I hope you liked today’s look. Do check out my fellow Femmes for their version!

  • Lily that looks sooo good, you’ve done a great job blending blending and blending! And thanks for posting a step by step tutorial as well, it’s interesting to see how other people go about creating their looks.

    • Thanks Lilit. A few readers have been asking for a step by step tutorial, so I thought I’d do it. I think I owed them for months now. LOL!

  • awww so pretty!

    • Thank you Mariella 🙂

  • I love the step-by-step tutorial – so neat and easy to understand =)
Love smokey eyes too, can’t go wrong for any occasions!!
    Happy Saturday babe xx

    • I’m glad the tutorial is easy to understand! And happy Saturday to you too, Mrs Mak 🙂

  • sataa

Thanks for the step by step tutorial !! it is perfect I am gonna try it soon

    • I’m glad you find it useful, Sataa. Do let me know how it works for you!

  • Catherine @ bcrueltyfree

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. I seem to always like your smokey eye looks… usually I don’t wear much dark makeup but your technique makes it less “you look like you have a black eye” and more sultry-but-wearable 🙂

    • Thank you Catherine 🙂 It might be my eye shape but I always prefer darker eye makeup so they look bigger and less puffy. Lol!

  • It looks lovely Lily! I do quite a lot of smokey eye during the day (in a laid back way) usually using some taupe or bronze cream shadow.

    • Hi Sofia. Taupes and bronzes are my favourite shades for smokey eyes. They’re so easy to work with and so beautiful.

  • Beautiful look, Laura Mercier Amethyst looks stunning on you!

    • Thank you Monika 🙂 Too bad it creases on me when worn on its own… a primer helps, or just layering it with powder eye shadow

  • Hey Lily, I love this! It’s definitely toned-down enough for daytime, but I like the lovely depth it adds to your eyes.

    • Thank you Sunny. I was careful to keep the colours within the eye socket so it looks less dramatic 🙂

  • I think the look is perfect! It has a lot of depth but also it’s nicely balanced so it’s not too extreme.

    • Thanks Larie 🙂 Not too extreme = the key words for daytime wear!

  • Claire

This is beautiful Lily! And a look I really like for myself as well 😀 I really like the deep colours from my Guerlain palettes as liner lately. I am still hoping that I can recreate that Guerlain smokey eye, haha (oh how much I live their add makeup looks). That YSL glossy balm looks yummy 😉 great tutorial Lily <3

    • Thanks Claire 🙂 I’m not sure I’m familiar with the Guerlain smokey eye you mentioned here. The YSL glossy balm is so comfortable to wear!!

  • Liz

Love your smokey eyes. I’ll have to try to give a damn during the day and copy this look. 😉

    • Well, when you give a damn one day, I’d like to see your version 🙂 LOL!
