Review: Clinique Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick in Matte Beauty

Clinique just launched a new matte lipstick not long ago. The company wanted a long lasting matte lipstick that doesn’t dry out the lips, and came up with this formula. ALL matte lipsticks I tried get a little uncomfortable at one point or another, so I was curious to see how this works.

Clinique Long Lasting Soft Matte Lipstick

I was sent Matte Beauty, a white based pink that reminded me of Twiggy. It goes on opaque and smooth at first swipe, and it doesn’t feel heavy on my lips either. I am also happy to report that it doesn’t transfer on my drinking cup, but it doesn’t last a greasy Asian meal. It wears about 4 hours on me without flaking, which is great, and I haven’t tried any longer, because I tend to get hungry and I’d be eating. Sorry, pregnancy woes. Like all matte lipsticks, this one also clings to the lips, but nothing uncomfortable. Be warned though – if you have dry flaky lips, it’d be better if you scrubbed your lips first. One or 2 layers of this lipstick gives you more than enough colour, but any more than that will leave you with wrinkly lips.

Below is how Matte Beauty looks like. It’s a little more milky in real life, if you get what I mean. Can’t seem to capture that in photos. Looks about right in the second photo though.

The new Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick Shades are only available online. There are 8 shades being sold at the moment, at RM70 each. I’m a bit reserved about this concept of selling it online only, because the online swatches aren’t exactly reliable. I like to SEE what that lipstick looks like before I purchase. I mean, that’s where we bloggers come in handy, but still, I find it a hassle and a gamble. Also, in this country, those who are online savvy are mostly of a particular age group, so maybe this is niche targeting? I do hope Clinique will have them sold at counters. That might be a more popular move, reaching a wider audience. Since Clinique is everywhere, it is convenient for people to drop by, then perhaps swatch and purchase. Have any of you tried these?

  • I want to try one! I love mattes. I’ve been waiting to see these at counters here…I hope they’re not online only here, too!

    • Lily

I was wondering why I haven’t heard much about these matte lipsticks…

  • Pretty! It looks really pretty on you! I wonder if they’ll come here now.

    • Lily

I hope so too! I wish someone had the swatches of all of them. LOL

  • Paritashah26

The shade is stunning! I do agree with you on selling the lipsticks online only! obviously I would love to swatch them n probably try them n then take a plunge but in such cases we do have to rely on online swatches n biggest issue being shades will look diff on diff skin tones so it becomes quite a struggle!

    • Lily

Quite a pity, really. It would take a lot of guesswork away if it’s available in stores

  • Great colour on you! Well that’s annoying it’s only sold online. I wonder if that’s happening in Taiwan too, since I’ve been waiting for these to show up for awhile now.

    • Lily

Oh you’ll have to let me know if this is happening in Taiwan as well!

  • Oh hey, what a beauty!!! I don’t think I see similar shades on you often, but you look GREAT! Is Clinique doing the web-exclusive thing in Malaysia, too? Here the Cheek Pops are only available online. I think it’s partially target marketing, and partially a way too boost their webshop. Most stores here give a discount on the RRP, but not the brand website. I guess if they don’t have some exclusives, most people wouldn’t shop there!

    • Lily

We don’t get discounts at Clinique stores here. Maybe it’s a way to get more people to shop online, but I’m not sure it’s a good move to make it exclusive. Most consumers probably prefer to try these in stores. Perhaps make better deals online instead of making them exclusive? Just sayin šŸ˜›

  • Oh wow, what a stunner! *gasps*

    • Lily

It’s quite pretty isn’t it? I was surprised a milky pink can be flattering. Lol!

  • Liz

Yeah, it’d never occur to me to want to buy Clinique online unless they offered exceptional deals or perks. I’ve finished a few of their lipsticks in the past, so I know they’re immensely wearable — just not very exciting. This one looks really nice on you, but the brand isn’t a huge temptation, ya know?

    • Lily

I know what you mean. It’s just like Benefit to me. Nothing much from that brand interests me. LOL!

  • I buy makeup unswatched all the time, but to think about it, Clinique is a brand I’d want to swatch in person. Kinda weird, but maybe it is the no frill practical image of the brand. I don’t know. šŸ˜‰
The pink looks very nice on you. It seems this color looks more attractive in matte formula, too.
On a side note, I’m glad Clinique is keeping the same metal tubes all these years. Brings back memories. šŸ™‚

    • Lily

LOL Lena. Doesn’t this tube also remind you of LMdB?

  • Icaria

I’m so happy they still have that metal tube! I’ve always loved it and now I hope these will be available here because that color is sooo pretty and I really like it on you. Not sure I would ever buy Clinique online, I mean it’s always been around, like Lauder. I know there’s a lot of money to be made with e-sales but the concept of “exclusive” is oh so restrictive and annoying!

    • Lily

I remember my first contact with Clinique was because of their lipstick. My friend wore a beautiful nude caramel and i wanted it šŸ™‚

  • I haven’t tried any of these matte varieties but I like that it wasn’t a killer matte as far as leaving your lips ravaged and raving for quenchitude! I like Clinique lipsticks in general. Love this bright pop of pink on you. Chuckling aloud at the comment about pregnancy eating. You’re the best! šŸ™‚

    • Lily

Lol you know, i can’t tell you the lipstick lasts for 6 or 8 hours when it’s just unrealistic. We got to eat!
