Review: Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara

Everyone is talking about the new Grandiose mascara. Truthfully, I haven’t even gone to the Lancome counter to check it out. It’s always been a hit or miss when it comes to Lancome’s mascara and I’ve had my fair share of mascara fails. Makes me feel like I’m wasting money on more expensive mascaras when I can just purchase drugstore ones. I’ve mentioned before that I really liked the Hypnose Doll mascara. Then a few blogger friends recommended Hypnose Star, and I was curious to give it a try. So I caved and bought it. I hardly ever write about mascaras, so I thought I’d share.

Hypnose Star Lancome Hypnose Star

I’ve had this for a while but never really used it until recently. I wanted to use up the other opened mascaras before they dried up. You know what? I’m a sucker for packaging, and this mascara looks really great. I also like that the brush is on the smaller side, and it is flat, tapered to a pointed edge. Here’s to show you what I mean – front view and side view of the brush.

The sides of the wand is a little curved, so you can use it to separate / curl your lashes. I like to use the flat side to pump up the volume before using the side to comb through the lashes. This is a waterproof formula, so it holds the curls really well. Another thing to note is that this mascara is rather wet. If not careful, you’ll get mascara goop on your lids. There was a bit of a learning curve, and I still sometimes get mascara on my lids which can get annoying. So, for that, I have a cotton bud ready to clean up the mess. The result however is really quite something. My lashes are typically fine and straight. Hypnose Star managed to give me volume, some length and definitely some curl.

However, would I pay RM95 for this mascara on a regular basis? No. I’m still looking for something that really works from the drugstore. I know people always say to throw out your mascara after 3 months, but I’m going to use this until it dries out, or maybe I’ll toss it around the 6 month mark, whichever comes first. 3 months is too short a time, and too expensive a mascara.

What mascara works for you?

I’m currently using the Tarte Camera, Lights & Lashes mascara and it’s not too bad. I usually use my mascaras past 6 months (yikes!).

    • Lily

It’s ridiculous that we have to throw it out after 3 months. Then they should make mini sized mascaras at half the price. Don’t you agree? I say if my eyes are OK, I’d still use it. It’s not as if someone else uses my mascara anyway.

  • Claire

agree on the mini sizes, I never use up a whole mascara, either it gets so dry or I just don’t use it anymore for sanitary and bacteria reasons. I feel the same about lancome mascaras, I have found my HG with YSL and use some loreal, also the new guerlain mascara was mind blowing, so awesome.

    • Lily

I haven’t tried any mascaras from YSL or Guerlain before. I think I will try my luck in drugstore Japanese brands. Maybe they’re better for Asian lashes.

  • I like this one! I find Lancome mascaras work really well for me. But I think they are WAY overpriced. Like c’mon. And also-I keep my mascaras longer too. I don’t wear them every day, so PFFT. Like hell Imma gonna throw them out after 3 months when I’ve only worn them like 20 times maybe.

    • Lily

Oh yeah especially if you have other mascaras in rotation! So now I try to be good and just have 1 opened at a time.

  • shucheng lim

I prefer Lancome Hypnose Doll to Stars as I find the brush for Stars a bit small for me. Lately I went crazy over mascara. Current rotating Guerlain maxi lash, cle de peau new released mascara, RMK matte mascara and Lancome Hypnose Doll and Star. I do keep my mascara for around 6mths, that’s the time they pretty much dried up. For Lancome Star, I prefer to use on my lower lashes. My fav is Guerlain and CDP out of the bunch.

    • Lily

It’s hard for me to get CdP and Guerlain here because they’re all in KL and not where I live. Sometimes I feel left out but I do count my blessings for minimised temptations 😛

      • shucheng lim

        you’re so right!

        • Lily

          🙂

  • Hey Lily, I tried a Lancome mascara a while ago (Hypnose Drama) and while it really IS dramatic, it makes my lash spiky instead of well-separated. I’m not sure that’s the result I’m looking for! I do like how this one looks on you, but probably not the getting onto the lid part. I’d be SO pissed if I had to clean up afterwards!

    • Lily

Eee… spiky is not a good look. Yes it gets annoying when I get it on my lids esp when I’ve already done my eye makeup! So hard to clean up sometimes. Sigh. That’s when I practise using profanity 😛

  • Nida Moughal

I have deluxe sample of this one and it works really fine on my lashes but when I run out like you I am not going to pay so much for it.

    • Lily

Yeah why make mascaras so expensive? We should campaign for smaller mascaras at half the price. Lol

  • Lancome mascaras don’t bring enough drama for me, but they are very nice lengthening, natural lash enhancing mascaras that is good for no makeup looks maybe. I keep going back to my RMK one which is a double ended one with a base coat and a mascara. Gives my lashes curl even if I dont curl it. For volume, Chanel is the only one I’ve worn and people mistake me as wearing falsies.

As for DS, the Japanese DS mascaras are my go-to’s, especially Fasio.

    • Lily

Oh! I was just thinking I should give Japanese drugstore brands a try. I’ll look at Fasio next. Anyone in particular that I should get? I think Kate the Driveler mentioned this brand before. ..

      • Yes! I remember Kate did a post about it too. Not sure if I managed to get what she recommended, the one I got may have been the latest one to launch then, in a grey packaging named ‘Curl Lock Mascara’ in the Long/lengthening version.

        • Lily

Thanks Noodles. Will go have a look 🙂

  • Sounds alright. But I’m sure that there are drugstore mascaras out there that will give you a similar or better effect. My all-time favorite drugstore mascara is without a doubt the Covergirl Flamed Out mascara. And I also like many of Maybelline’s Volum’ Express mascaras.

    • Lily

We don’t get Cover girl here. Agreed that Maybelline makes pretty good mascaras 🙂

  • Everything smudges on me >:( And I know what you mean – it’s hard to pay that much money for mascara when you have to throw it out regularly!

    • Lily

Even non smudge mascaras? And even with primer on the lids? There are always falsies if you really need it though. So no biggie!

  • I’m actually wearing this mascara today!
For a non-waterproof mascara, it holds my curls pretty well, so I’m impressed. I also have a new tube of this in wp formula. Curious about finding how that would work for me.
My everyday mascara is still L’Oreal Voluminous, though. 🙂

    • Lily

I don’t think we get the L’Oreal Voluminous mascaras here. Those we get are the ones that have are the dual ended ones with the white primer on one side and mascara on the other.
Seriously, they never carry the good things here >_<

  • Jaa

Oh the difference it makes is clear as day on your lashes! I have a sample of this mascara somewhere. I should try to find it and see if I can duplicate the result! I don’t mind throwing away drugstore mascaras after 3 months but high-end mascaras – umm… no way. LOL. But 6 months is usually my limit. 😀

    • Lily

I think 6 months is good enough for regular use. The mascara would’ve dried up by then anyway… or not 🙂

  • silverkis

Gosh, i have this somewhere in my stash too, but like you, i’m loath to open another brand new one until I use up something. And yes, i keep my mascara until the very last drop *shamefaced* The effects are gorgeous on you though, i’m tempted to rip mine open now!!

    • Lily

It’s a good habit to use one mascara at a time! Just that sometimes, curiosity gets the better of me 😛

  • This one failed to thrill me performance-wise, but the packaging was stunning. And Betty Boop on the ads?! Of course I was going to buy it! However, since this one, I’ve yet to buy another Lancome mascara. I do think Definicils Waterproof is the bomb, but I almost never need WP mascara and hate taking them off. My favorite drugstore mascara ATM is Maybelline Pumped Up! Volum Express. Thanks for reviewing this – it really looks great on your lashes! Pow! 🙂

    • Lily

Thanks Kristen. I’m still looking for a drugstore alternative. It kills me having to purchase mascaras so expensive >_<

      • TRUTH!!! I feel 100% the same! It’s nutty to spend so much on something that’s a guaranteed toss out after 3-6 months (9 if you’re gangsta)! 😉

        • Lily

LOL at gangsta!! Maybe I should try it… but the risk is eye infection. Hahaha!

  • Liz

Yay, glad you like! Lancome makes good mascaras but the prices OMG. Right now I like the new Clarins Be Long Mascara but that’s not exactly cheap either.

    • Lily

I’m going to try some Japanese drugstore brands and see how they go – after I use up all unopened mascaras in my stash!

  • wan

    hi, chloe..
I have this and still using it too from my lancome box,
Prior to this, I have use ZA mascara (volume) I love it,

still holding myself to get ZA wide eye mascara(smaller wand ..like maybelline cat eye wand)

    • Lily

I haven’t tried many things from ZA actually. For drugstore mascara, I usually just get Maybelline 🙂
