Review: Dior Pore Minimizer: Skin Refining Matte Primer

I never thought face primers are a must. I believe you must moisturize your skin before applying foundation, but primers… I’m on the fence. I can do with it, I can do without it. However, I do have some enlarged pores around my nose, and there are times when I attend special functions that I want to look more polished. I want my makeup to last longer and without oiliness (so I don’t look shiny when photographed). When Dior launched their Pore Minimizer here late last year, I bought myself one because it promises toΒ visibly minimize pores for a perfect complexion, even in close-ups.

Pore Minimizer

The Dior Pore Minimizer gives you the illusion of a flawless complexion. To sum it up, it is a whole tube of silicones that fill your open pores and mattify your skin before you apply your foundation. If you’re sensitive to ‘cones, then this product is a definite no no for you. You only really need just a small amount of this on your skin. It feels dry and slippery at the same time, and for me, it is best to tap it on trouble areas – i.e. around my nose. I don’t need it anywhere else, because my sometimes oily area is my T-zone, and the main purpose for me to get this is just to minimize the appearance of my open pores. I just can’t make it work if I rub in the product. It doesn’t sink into my skin because it’s supposed to just sit on top of the pores, if you know what I mean. After applying this on moisturized skin, I’d apply my foundation as usual.

Does it work? Yes, it does. It covers my open pores and when I apply my foundation, it goes on very smoothly and the pores looks visibly smaller. Some smaller pores actually disappeared. I don’t use this very often, but when I do, it’s always a pleasure to see my real life “photoshopped and blurred” face πŸ˜› The Dior Pore Minimizer: Skin Refining Matte Primer retails for RM145/30ml and it is available nationwide. Is this a must? For me, no. It’s nice to have something like this when I need it.

Do you use face primers? Do you feel the need to actually use one?

Dior Pore Minimizer ingredients

  • I’m a primer nut!! It definitely helps me out a lot, especially with the humidity. I haven’t tried this before as I have quite a lot of primers to get through as is, but it sounds nice!

    • Lily

Another primer I like is the MUFE HD primer. I actually used up the purple one. That one is also siliconey, but not as slippery as this πŸ™‚

  • I don’t mind cones and even prefer some cones in my foundation. Sometimes a good color match just isn’t enough, you know?
This sounds like solid products. I’m still using GA Fluid Sheer in 07 as my primer. It works similar plus adds some glow to the finish. πŸ™‚

    • Lily

Oh yeah, sometimes cones are good. I guess we’re lucky our skin is not sensitive to cones then!

  • Jaa

Ahh so glad to hear this works for you, Lily! I tried mine when it first came out and didn’t have success. I find it to be too drying on me. So sad since I really wanted to love it. πŸ™

    • Lily

That’s a pity, Jaa. I hope you had a sample instead of the full sized product!

      • Jaa

I wish… I bought the full size. I was so sure I was going to love it! LOL.

        • Lily

Oh dear. Perhaps give it to a family or friend who will appreciate it πŸ™‚

  • Man I want this. However, I struggle with ‘cones as they make my skin look INCREDIBLE – but then get super crazy 1994-level oily. After years of struggling, I’ve finally figured out this summer that my foundation works best on clean, non-moisturized, non-primed skin. Kind of a bummer when you love moisturizers and primers, lol!!

    • Lily

Oh, I can’t apply foundation without first moisturizing my skin. It might be habit though. I just can’t wash my face, tone then skip moisturizer πŸ˜›

      • Most people can’t! I definitely don’t think my routine is anywhere near “normal”! I’ve never in my life heard a makeup artist NOT say to moisturize before applying foundation, but yet, it works so much better that way for me. Toner, you say? Gawd I wish I could find a toner my skin liked. Never happened and I’ve been trying for roughly 20 years! It looks like such a brilliant step but my skin goes bonanza bonkers. Isn’t skin crazy?! How one method works for one person but not at all for another? Skincare is the craziest thing to try to find your “HG” products in because everyone’s skin is so different!

        • Lily

Ah yes, our skin is a mystery. But hey, if it works for you, who’s to say it’s wrong? It’s such a personal thing so each person’s skincare journey should be different πŸ™‚

  • I have this! But I find it doesn’t hide my pores all that well, but I’ll try just tapping it in and see if that helps!

    • Lily

Oh, I have to tap it on my skin. If I rub it in, it just won’t work.

  • i have this and I quite like it. The weird thing is that I find that it looks good, but if I toung my face it sort of feels oily. Ok, it must be that it feel silicony…

    • Lily

I think it’s that siliconey slip. It definitely makes skin look much smoother though πŸ™‚

  • I actually use primers almost regularly now, sometimes because it feels good to have a layer between my skin and foundation πŸ˜‰ I have this one too and I like it, but proper moisturization and not overdosing it are a must!

    • Lily

Good on you for using primers regularly πŸ™‚ I really should get into it and try to at least use one that’s been sitting around for a year. LOL! And yes, I agree. Just a little of this primer is enough.

  • Liz

I was a hard-core primer user but lately I don’t bother. I did test this out though and didn’t like the feel of it. If I go back to primers, it’s either going to be the Hourglass ones (my old fave) or MAC Prep + Prime. BECCA has a decent one too but it can feel kind of heavy.

    • Lily

If I HAD to choose, I’d probably want to try the MUFE HD primer again. I used up the purple one, before I was too critical about makeup, and now I’m wondering if it’s really that good, or if it’s because I was less fussy. LOL!

  • I am on and off with primers, but I use them most regularly in the winter. I’ll use Laura Mercier moisturizing one because my skin needs all the moisture it can get once cold weather hits!

    • Lily

Oh yeah, I imagine my skin would need more help in winter too! There’s no problem with dryness in this weather, just humidity and heat πŸ™‚
