Review: Lunasol Water Gel Foundation in Y002

I always prefer lighter coverage foundations. I love the weightlessness of the foundation, and I only need some coverage to even out my complexion. Sometimes though, we need some heavier coverage foundation for a more flawless finish for that special occasion. The Lunasol Water Gel Foundation is oneย of them.

The shade I use is Y002, the lightest yellow based shade available here, and while it looks very yellow, it doesn’t look like it when applied. This foundation provides at least a medium coverage, and can be built up to full coverage. I like that while it gives more coverage, it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. It keeps my skin moisturized, and doesn’t emphasize flakes. While it covers redness and some minor marks, it does not cover my freckles. It makes my skin look brighter and even, and I don’t need to use any concealer with this foundation. I don’t even need to powder if I don’t want to.

As you can see in the before after photo below, my skin is evened out and a little brighter (which I need because my face is a little duller compared to the rest of me) but you can still see the pigmentation in all its glory. I don’t try to cover them up either. Let’s stick to looking more natural and believable ok? I’m not into makeup that looks like face paint. You can also see that the finish is very natural, just like my skin. It might be my skin condition at the moment, but I don’t even need to touch up or powder after a few hours. There is a little glow on my face after my skin’s natural oil shines through, but nothing I need to blot.

I generally stay away from heavier coverage foundations because the shade match is more forgiving, but when it comes to Japanese brands, I can easily find one that suits me better. Is this foundation that good? Yup, I love it because it just works so effortlessly. It tones down my skin redness without me having to use a colour correcting primer, and the foundation shade matches me perfectly. I have no complaints ๐Ÿ™‚

I bought this more than a year ago for RM168/30g so I don’t know if there’s any price hike since then. It is pricier than brands like Lancome and Dior, but worth it. Have you tried anything from Lunasol before?

  • We don’t have Lunasol here in the US but that hasn’t stopped me from compiling a mental wish list, lol! Because you never know, maybe I wake up tomorrow and find out I’m traveling abroad! ๐Ÿ˜‰ This looks like lovely skin, which is how you know you have a great foundation. When someone compliments your skin and you know it’s been splotchy and break-out prone, you know you have a winning foundation on your hands! and cheers to getting to skip concealer. I’m all about that life. ๐Ÿ™‚

There are just so many brands out there! I’d like to try so many things but it’s just not feasible. Of course, when and if I get a chance, I’d be super excited ๐Ÿ™‚ If you need me to get anything for you though, let me know!

      • Ooh thanks, Lily!! I will keep that in mind if I see a Lunasol lovely that cannot pass me by! ๐Ÿ˜€

        • Lily

But truth be told, their collections are pretty much the same year after year. I kinda stopped looking at their new stuff. It’s erm, boring >_<

  • I’d love to try this some day! It looks really natural on you. And what redness woman? I see NONE in the before! You have such great skin lady.

    • Lily

You’re too kind. This pregnancy has been very kind to my skin as well!

  • lyn

This is one of my faves too! It’s easy to wear and lightweight. I love Lunasol but I haven’t actually checked out their counters in a while so I’m not sure what’s new these days.

    • Lily

Same here! Thing is, their colour releases look similar every time, nothing too exciting >_<

  • I’ve actually never tried anything from Lunasol before! I keep hearing Japanese brands do great shade matches for yellow-based skin, but they all look pretty light to me for some reason?

    • Lily

I’m sure there’s a shade for you, Sunny. They probably only cater to those from fair – light – medium, and I really doubt they have dark shades. Never seen one! My skintone is fair / light, with yellow base, so it’s great news for me ๐Ÿ˜›

  • Lovely! Must see if I can get a sample! Love me a good yellow based foundy. Now that you’ve asked, don’t think I’ve brought anything from Lunasol before, though I randomly keep an eye out for their makeup, just never loved anything to open the floodgates. Maybe this foundy will ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Lily

I hope you’ll like it. Actually, their blushes are not bad either. Sheer and natural. Can’t go wrong with them!

I wanted to try Lunasol so badly while in Singapore but they were too pricey to gamble on while pressed for time. And I go back and forth on high coverage foundations — most of the time I think I don’t need it anymore, and then as soon as my skin misbehaves, I just want the most opaque thing to throw onto my face. D:

    • Lily

Ah yes, when it comes to foundations, you really need to take your time. Thing is, the SAs here look at you weird when you tell them you need more sample to try for a few days >_<

  • Pffft your bare skin looks perfectly beautiful, Lily ๐Ÿ˜› I have the same preference for foundations, so I wish we had access to more brands here!

    • Lily

Gosh Larie, the lighting was kind to my skin. I have dark circles now, and my skin tone is uneven. I haven’t been getting much sleep because I get Braxton Hicks especially at night, and last night was scary because it actually hurt! Did a scan and everything’s OK, so I guess it’ll be like this until the baby comes out. UGH!

  • Oooh this looks GOOD! And so yellow, I like that.

    • Lily

      Yellow bases FTW!

  • Jaa

The difference is super obvious in the after photo! It’s like you are GLOWING! ๐Ÿ˜€ And no concealer needed? Awesome. But it’s not like you need it in the first place. ;D

    • Lily

LOL thanks. I like that it brightens and evens out my skin tone. The coverage is heavier than most of the liquid foundations in my stash, but very handy indeed.
