Review: YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Glossy Balm Crystal Color

I got sucked in purely by the packaging. YSL is not available in Malaysia and the closest counter is in our neighbouring country in Singapore. I ordered mine online when there was a promotion, and I bought these sight unseen. I chose the sheerer shades because you can’t really go awfully wrong with the shades. Look at the lipstick though. I love the embossing of YSL at the centre of the lipstick tube.

The 2 shades I got were Mouthwatering Berry and Sweet Fig. I didn’t know what to expect, and from the first application, I thought I was eating candy. Literally. The scent is of sweet fruit punch, nothing too unpleasant, but if you’re expecting it to be scentless, you’re in for a disappointment.Β The scent lingers for a while, so if your nose is fussy, you might really want to try these on before purchasing. I’m lucky that while my nose is sensitive, I don’t really mind this scent. I guess the name “Sheer Candy” is really appropriate because these lipsticks are sheer and yes, smells just like candy. Then, I realised these are actually marketed as tinted lip balms!! Such a huge “DUH” moment for me. LOL!

YSL Volupt Sheer Candy

These lip balms are supposed to keep our lips hydrated for at least 8 hours, and *cough* I really can’t tell. The balm is already gone by the second hour and I didn’t even munch on anything in between. Lasting power is definitely not its strong point. Both Mouthwatering Berry and Sweet Fig apply very smoothly and they are also very slippery. So slippery that it doesn’t apply evenly for some reason. I also don’t find it very moisturizing. After doing a few lip swatches, my lips flake and I need to apply lip balm. These don’t cut it. I’d prefer it if they were marketing as just very sheer lipsticks instead πŸ˜›

Against my arm, Mouthwatering Berry is actually a light pink while Sweet Fig looks likeΒ warm rosey shade. Because these are very sheer colours, they will look different on everyone depending on the natural lip colour. Here is how they look on me.

I wouldn’t say I’m in love with these, but I’m a sucker for packaging. They’re not bad, and if you’re looking for something sheer and somewhat moisturizing, then these are for you. Then again, I’m sure you’ll find something with less attractive packaging at less than half the price. What say you?

They look nice on the lips but I have a hard time paying that much for sheer lipsticks. I am liking YSL a lot lately though. It’s dangerous!

    • Lily

I think I’m safe from YSL lemmings for a while… they’re not available in our country!

  • I never really got on with YSL! Like you, for me, they are just OK.

    • Lily

      Good for the wallet πŸ™‚

  • These are perhaps my least fav lipstick line from YSL, but the other formulas with their more intense pigment, you’ll want to choose in person I think. I have one of these in the bright red, and my lips do seem to like these more than the new Dior Baume thingys

    • Lily

I haven’t tried the Dior Baume yet. I might just have to, you know, just to compare πŸ˜›

  • I like the Rouge Volupte Shine range a lot, sheer but buildable, they stay on for a bit longer too. Was very tempted to get these as well, the packaging is just so pretty. πŸ™‚

    • Lily

Sigh… I’m a sucker for packaging too, and it’s just so silly. It’s the product that matters, right? LOL!

  • Hey Lily, I haven’t tried these at all! I do like Rouge Volupte Shine, but that’s a range from which I can’t seem to find a lot of shades that I want (my wallet says phew). These are pretty on you, but I’m sorry to hear they don’t cut it as tinted lip balms! For something so sheer, it’d have a better selling point if they had at least nailed the formula.

    • Lily

Right? I mean, I like that it’s emollient and easy to apply, but hate that it goes on uneven on my lips. It’s so weird!

  • The YSL lipsticks have an intense scent, lol. I had one but after a while it made my lips kind of itch & tingle, so I got rid of it. The bullet was all smashed already since I had dropped it (on my favorite white shirt, T_T).

    • Lily

Oh yeah, the scent is strong! I wonder what ingredient made your lips itch and tingle though. ..

  • I got sucked in by the packaging of this once but got an allergic reaction to the product itself! Uuuggghh, by lips swelled, itched, got bumps and then got really dry for about 5 days no matter how much lip balm I used. It was a pity that it had to go in the bin, as I loved the color I had (and the packaging!).

    • Lily

Oh dear, similar reaction that Larie had. I’m so lucky I didn’t get this allergic reaction. I’d be very very upset otherwise πŸ™

      • Plus, it’s not exactly a “cheap lip balm” as in to put the money down the drain because of an allergic reaction πŸ™

        • Lily

I completely understand how you feel, Sofia πŸ™ Well, good thing is, now you know better!

  • The texture of the one I have (#8 Iced Plum) is pretty good, but definitely not as hydrating as a nice tube of emollient lip balm. They are gorgeous though!! Mind bogglingly so!

    • Lily

That’s why I got sucked in. They ARE beautiful to look at!
