Review: Clinique Pop Lip Color + Primer in Melon Pop and Cherry Pop

I’ve been seeing these Clinique Pop Lip Colors everywhere. It’s not surprising, since these are really affordable, and the shades available are really pretty. They are pigmented lipstick and lip primer in one. The smoothing primer is infused with the lipstick so that lips look juicier, smoother. The Pop Lip Colors give a modern velvety finish, but I actually think it’s more of a satin finish. I have Melon Pop and Cherry Pop to show you. They retail for RM83 each and you can purchase themΒ online at Clinique Malaysia’s website <click here>. Free nationwide shipping for orders RM250 and above. Did you know that there are 4 new shades of their much loved Cheek Pops? You know, just in case you need help hitting 250 πŸ™‚

Clinique Pop Lip Color Cherry and Melon Pop

These fragrance free lipsticks come in minimalistic packaging. The tube reflects the lipstick shade that you get, and if you refer picture above, the color on the tube matches very well with the color on the lipstick bullet. Melon Pop seems to be the sheerer of the 2, and while the color is light, it doesn’t wash me out. It is a brighter nude, which I think will look better on those with lighter skin. Cherry Pop is a bright red that leans ever so slightly pink. This goes on opaque in 1 swipe, and the formula is very easy to work with. The lipstick glides on the lips very smoothly and it is very forgiving on lines and dry patches. I guess that’s the primer at work.

I get a full 4-hour wear on Cherry Pop with no fading whatsoever but the color does transfer. You’ll be staining your glass and eating utensils – one of my pet peeves. So, I prefer to remove my lipstick before eating. Drinking, well, can’t be helped. I can’t be removing my lipstick every time I drink! Don’t be ridiculous. heh.

Melon and Cherry Pop swatch

Melon Pop seems to disappear much faster, but that’s usually the case for lighter colors. One thing to note is that the lipsticks seem more comfortable with 2 or more passes on the lips. If I wear it sheered out, it seems to be more drying, for some strange reason. So when I want to wear Cherry Pop sheer, I’ll have to make sure I apply a lip balm as a base.

Here are how Melon Pop and Cherry Pop look on me. I have minimal makeup on, and I just started wearing liquid liner again. I skipped mascara because my eye is not fully recovered. You probably can’t tell from the photos but I was also wearing a sheer wash of color on my lids.

Before you ask, on my face, I was testing out some bases. I mixed my Dior Radiant Base in 002 with Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Pearl (2 to 1 ratio) on my palm, rub them together then pat it on my face and neck before foundation. I find that I don’t even need much foundation after that. It brightens my skin completely, and makes my skin look so smooth and dewy. It does make me look a bit pale in these photos. So after taking these shots, I added some bronzer on my face to look more human πŸ™‚

Have you tried these Clinique Pop Lip Color + Primer yet? What color did you pick up? The darker shades Berry Pop and Cola Pop look interesting. I might have to try them on when I’m at the counter.

  • Hi Lily, everyone is raving about these. I saw them in person and I loved them. Melon Pop was one of the shades I really liked but I think I will end up getting Wow Pop because I love hot pink lipsticks!

The Cherry Pop is definitely your color though! And I love that subtle base on your skin. I need to try using my Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector as a base or mixed with my foundation!

Hope your eye fully recovers soon!

    • Lily

Oh Wow Pop looks amazing! I bet it looks great on you Agata πŸ™‚
Should you try mixing the Shimmering Skin Perfector with your base, please let me know how it works on you!

  • I have Melon Pop and it’s ok, not my fave. I really have to apply a lot of it to look good, and then it looks like I’m wearing SO much lipstick hahaha. I like Cherry Pop on you though! It looks better! Might get that one…someday hahaha.

    • Lily

I think I know what you mean, Tracy. Melon Pop is really light, and not so easy to pull off πŸ™‚

  • Myyyy goodness! That Cherry Pop though! So face brightening. So pretty, Lily!

    • Lily

      Thank you Arianne!

  • Cherry Pop rules on you, Lily! I’ll have to check these out. Oh and I totally remove my lipstick before I eat, too. It just makes it so much easier than trying to avoid smearing and the ever-so-lovely bottom-lip-chin-bump! Forget about it!

    • Lily

Cherry Pop seems to be the favourite here. And yeah, bottom lip chin bump thingy… not attractive. Hahaha!

  • Liz

Love Cherry Pop on you! Gorgeous!

I’m resisting stupid Cola Pop Blush but maybe in the fall when the colour feels more “appropriate.” These lipsticks don’t call to me at all though.

    • Lily

UGH, Cola Pop. We don’t get it here. We only have 4 new shades, and they’re all safe colors. Nude, Melon, Pink and Pansy. BORING! That said, I want Nude. Haha

  • Great picks for the two shades! Both look amazing on you but in a different way. I’ll keep these in mind πŸ™‚

    • Lily

Thanks Meiko. Some of the pinks look great too πŸ™‚

  • BlushableMe

Cherry Pop is calling my name! I absolutely love reds with a bit of a sheen. A lighter shade would probably be more practical, but that color is sure eye catching.

    • Lily

When it comes to lipsticks, nothing’s practical. HAHAHA!

  • Hi Lily, i’ve not tried any of these… and it’s interesting that Clinique is back, and seeming to target even younger audiences than before! Cherry pop looks really good on you!

    • Lily

You’re right, Linda. Their makeup has been trendier than before, and with more affordable price tags, their audience is even larger!

  • Aaah I like how these look on you, especially Cherry Pop brightens your face, so lovely.
I am trying a few of these lately as well, love the packaging idea as you mentioned. Now that you said, yes they transfer lol. But this is because they are so hydrating I believe, they also last quiet well on me so I can live with the transfering. As long as it doesn’t reach my nose hahaha

    • Lily

I don’t see how the lipstick can reach your nose, Sara. HAHAHA!

  • I’m wearing Plum Pop today! I like the look of Melon Pop too though… *grabs her list* *adds*

    • Lily

Oh, Plum Pop looks gorgeous, Melissa. Melon Pop will look great too πŸ™‚

      • You said ‘will’… Not ‘would’. So now I have no choice but to buy it, right?

        *always looking for an excuse*

  • A Girl With Pink Cheeks

I’ve not tried them yet but I definitely will next time I’m around a Clinique countour πŸ˜‰

    • Lily

If you do try them, do let me know what you think πŸ™‚

  • Hey Lily, ooo Cherry Pop is gorgeous on you! I got Berry Pop but I haven’t had the time to try it out yet. Definitely can’t wait to give it a proper go tho!

    • Lily

Oh Berry Pop looks great! If I didn’t already have so many berries, I’d get it. Cola Pop looks interesting too, both the lipstick and the blush πŸ™‚

  • Lily

Yes, I would think so too πŸ™‚

  • Cherry Pop looks so amazing on you. I feel inspired to try this shade out x

    • Lily

Thank you Ting. I’d love to see how it looks on you πŸ™‚

  • Lily

From all the years of wearing lipstick, I wonder how many tubes of lipsticks we’ve eaten! o_O

  • I love how both look on you, especially the Cherry Pop looks wonderful on you! These have arrived in Spain so I might swatch them to see if I like any.

    • Lily

Thank you Sofia. Cherry Pop seems to be a favourite. I think it’s because red lipsticks look better on camera too. LOL!

      • It might on camera but for day to day real life I prefer the other one, so much easier to wear…

  • Lily

Thank you! Grape Pop looks lovely πŸ™‚

  • Nailz Craze

These look nice! I would love to try Melon Pop!

    • Lily

You should! They are beautiful and affordable πŸ™‚
