On Rotation: Sunscreens

Have I mentioned before that I don’t go out of the house without sunscreen on my face at least? Have I also mentioned before that I use sunscreen even when it’s cloudy or there’s thunderstorm? I also apply sunscreen on my children, hoping it will instill a habit in them. Currently, I have 4 sunscreens on rotation, from a very affordable Biore one to the pricier one from the Dior Capture Totale range.

sunscreens

Both the Sarafit* were sent to me for consideration purposes, and you know what? These are actually really good. The liquid one dries matte, not very slippery so it rubs the skin a little, but it feels comfortable on. The kids love this one. The spray bottle is sunscreen in powder form. I don’t know how I feel about this, because I can’t see what goes on the skin, and whether or not the sunscreen is ON my skin, you know? I just see white powder everywhere. I also don’t know how much protection I get from this spray. While it is a nice concept, I don’t feel comfortable using it, with my main concern of not knowing if I’m protected from the sun.

I purchased the Biore sunscreen just recently (they have so many different ones, but to me, they’re all the same) for the kids to apply on their body before their swimming lesson. Believe it or not, Ashlyn has olive skintone, and she turns GREEN after being in the sun for too long. So now, she asks for sunscreen, saying “Mommy, I don’t want to be a frog”. Hahahaha! They’re in the water for about an hour, but I use SPF50 anyway. I was tempted to get those water resistant ones but I tried them and they are so thick and tacky. I doubt the children will like them.

I purchase more affordable sunscreens for my children because things tend to disappear rather quickly. It would be less painful if they lost a bottle of Biore compared to a bottle of Dior πŸ™‚

sunscreens on rotation

As for myself, I’ve been rotating between Shiseido and Dior. I loved the Shiseido Perfect UV Protector, and this new one, with WetForce technology is even better! When other sunscreens lose some effectiveness after you’ve been in water, this one actually gets stronger. My husband bought this for me when I told him how cool I think it is. I use it on days I know I’d be sweating a lot. I also use this on my children before we go out. However, it is quite strong in alcohol so it might not be for you if you have sensitive skin.Β On lazy days, I use my Dior Capture Totale Multi-Protection UVB Base Sunscreen. It is tinted light pink to brighten skin tone, and it also has a dewy finish. All I do is to set with powder, and I’m good to go. I think I bought this last year, so I’m not sure if there are any changes to this sunscreen (Dior usually revamps its skincare line once in a while).

These are all pretty good sunscreens in my book but if I had to choose, I’d choose the Shiseido one. It dries semi matte, is a great base for foundation and I’m well protected even when I sweat. Considering where I live, this point makes it the ultimate winner.

Do you wear sunscreen daily? What are you using now?

My friend Linda also wrote about her selections of sunscreen lately. So please feel free to go read her post (here).

  • Hey Lily, haha Ashlyn really turns green?! That’s interesting! I know that I look really green in photos if I wear khaki green, which is unfortunate because I love that color so much in autumn (I still wear it tho)! I THINK my olive undertone actually becomes less visible when I am tanned. It is when I am paler that you see the olive more. OOO this is fun πŸ™‚

    • Lily

LOL yes, I found out when I first let her swim in the afternoon. She got out of the water and I was slack jawed. My baby turned green! HAHAHAHA!

  • Hahaha green poor kid! Yes I wear sunscreen every day too! It’s a must for me. If I don’t I burn and my hyperpigmentation comes back. I used to like the old Shiseido one, so I’d probably love this one too. Someday I’ll pick it up when I’m out of face sunscreens.

    • Lily

Yeah, poor girl. She tans very easily too. Chloe just turns red. LOL! Shiseido is a good one – but I’m still looking for a physical sunscreen that doesn’t break me out. Any recs?

      • Yes! There’s one from Neutrogena that I like I showed it in my Neutrogena post, and Avene has one for the face as well. Also, SKinceueticals has one that has a tint to it-that one I really like too! I’ll try and post about that one as well soon!

        • Lily

I’m going to check out Avene this weekend. I don’t think we have the sunscreens though, from what I can remember. I’ll wait for your Skinceuticals review also πŸ™‚

  • Liz

I like the Shiseido so far but I’m trying to finish up an older Neutrogena first. The Bobbi Brown primer with SPF50 is pretty good too!

    • Lily

I saw the photo on your Instagram, the Shiseido WetForce. I recently received a deluxe sample of the La Mer sunscreen too (I used up the full sized one) so that’s added in the rotation as well. Once I’m done with one of these, I want to try the physical sunscreen from Skinceuticals. Have you tried that?

      • Liz

I haven’t but it’s on the list! Heard so many good things about Skinceuticals.

  • Thank you so much for the link love, Lily!! I love Biore sunscreens too!! I’ve not tried Sarafit though… i wonder if they’re even here in Singapore. Ashlyn turns GREEN?? omg that’s a new one! LOL!!! Ezra is extremely fair, and i’m so worried he’ll get burnt, so i slather on the Shiseido SPF50 on him every time we go to the pool. But i’m a bad mummy cos i forget when we go to the zoo or something until it’s too late. Oh and i wear sunscreen even when i’m at home now!!

    • Lily

You’re welcome, Linda. And yes, Ashlyn turns green. It’s so obvious she looks green though. It’s kinda funny, but she hates it. Chloe is much fairer, and she turns red, so she must have SPF50. I try to get them to wear a hat when we’re out though. I have to wear one too, so they feel like it’s more fun? Kids and their logic.

  • So cute, I don’t want to be a frog πŸ™‚ Thanks for your fantastic post, I was sort of wondering which sunscreen(s) I should choose this year, the Shiseido one sounds good! xx

    • Lily

Yes I agree! I reach for that the most actually πŸ™‚

  • Awww hehe, well, I get why she doesn’t like going all Kermitty πŸ˜‰ I’ve actually been experimenting with a ton of new sunscreens these past few weeks but they all disappointed me. Some balled up on my skin, others looked super cakey, others left me looking like Casper the ghost,… so I just went back to Glominerals sunscreen. Why fix it if it ain’t broke, right?

    • Lily

You’re right. Stick to what works… but that seems to be a little difficult for us bloggers though. We’re always testing new things πŸ™‚

  • I also wear sunscreen daily, rain or shine, but I do tend towards lower SPF in the winter with heavier moisturizer, and then switch that around for summer (lighter moisturizer with heavier SPF). I have the older version of the Shiseido (non wet force? lol), I love how it’s non-greasy, though the white cast does bother me a bit sometimes.

    • Lily

Hey Meiko, when I was studying in Australia, I didn’t wear sunscreen in winter. Because of that (I was there for a few years), I developed freckles! I learned my lesson and now I never go anywhere without an SPF 50 PA+++ (at least) on my face

  • Jaa

I also wear sunscreen regardless of the weather. Indoor, outdoor, with or without sunshine. I feel better to have it on! I have to look for the Shiseido WetForce one! I’m intrigued! Right now I have a few on my rotation – MAC, Benefit, La Mer, Dior, and also the Biore milky pink one! πŸ™‚ And I still want to buy more. I think sunscreen is my next obsession. LOL

    • Lily

Oh I haven’t tried any sunscreen from MAC or Benefit before. I’m just really loving the Shiseido Wetforce at the moment. I might need to get a few backups when there’s a promotion on πŸ™‚
