Review: Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector & Optimizer

As you would have guessed, I always include a brightening serum into my skincare routine at one point or another. I usually do some sort of rotation, between anti aging and brightening, while keeping hydration the priority. So, I layer serums. At the moment, I use the Antipodes Worship serum as a base before I use another serum after. I have been using the Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector & Optimizer (RM375/50ml) for 6 weeks now, and let me tell you how it works for me.

When I use a brightening serum, I target to even out my skin tone. I haven’t been using any brightening products prior to testing this, and after 2 weeks of using this serum, there is a noticeable difference in my skin tone. I posted my bare face on Instagram because I was so happy about it, but I jinxed myself. A pimple (or two) popped up the very next day. Gosh darn it! And I did the worst thing ever – I started popping them way too early. URGH! And then, there were marks. *profanity* It takes a long time for marks to fade on my skin. At least 2 months without help. I kept on using this serum, and now, as I’m writing this 4 weeks after the bare face photo was taken, my skin is back to *smiley face*. No marks. Yippee!! While this serum does nothing to lighten my freckles (nothing could, mind you, and that’s why I went for laser treatment), I can vouch it brightens your skin, evens out your skin tone, and gets rid of pimple marks!

So, what is it, really? This serum is housed in a dual chamber bottle with a dark spot corrector on one side and a soothing optimizer on the other. One gets rid of hyperpigmentation while the other quells irritation / inflammation, helping our skin resist future darkening. The dual chambered pump is to separate the corrector from the optimizer to preserve the purity and potency of the ingredients until we use it. While CL-302 complex brightens our skin, Gyokuro Extract (a Japanese green tea) delivers strong antioxidant and calming properties.

Science aside, I’m just here to tell you it works for me. The texture is not silicone-y (I’m sure this is not a word, but whatever) which is awesome, and it absorbs immediately into the skin without any tacky feeling. I use it every morning and night, and because this is a brightening serum, a broad spectrum sunscreen is a must. Heck, even if you’re not using any skincare, you should be using sunscreen! I like that this serum comes in a 50ml bottle (most serums are 30ml nowadays) and after using it diligently twice a day for 6 weeks, the bottle still feels as heavy as I first got it. Too bad I can’t see how much I’ve used though. It would be a good indicator so we know when to get a backup, rather than panicking after using the very last pump. Good thing we can now order Clinique online and it’s free delivery since this product is more than RM250.

This serum has been available since beginning of this month. Have you seen this when you go shopping? To those of you celebrating, how was your Lunar New Year? Mine was awesome! Went to Singapore for a short break, but now I’m sick. Chloe and Ashlyn got sick first, then me, and now Ashton. Poor bubs. Fever and cough make a cranky baby. I hope you had a good break, and for those of you who don’t celebrate, what have you been up to? I’ve been away for nearly 2 weeks, and I don’t have time to go through Twitter or my blog post feed. Please update me!

xoxo Lily

  • Hi Lily.. I haven’t tried Clinique skincare in a while except their cleansing balm. But, I tried Clarins brightening serum sample from White Plus+ range a few days back and must say, it was quite good.

    • Lily

Do you like their cleansing balm? I remember liking it, but I also remember using it up rather quickly. LOL! Ah yes, I think I liked the Clarins serum too… but I also suspected it gave me whiteheads.

  • I’m always sceptical about these dual chambered packagings because (cough cough) I’ve had to make the packaging of products like them in the past and theres just something about them that doesn’t delight me… I hope you’re feeling better now Lily! I was like a zombie with my flu yesterday. Today I’m better, though maybe its because I had a cocktail of pills a few hours ago and downed them with a red bull! 😀

    • Lily

Do share Sofia!! What is about dual chambered packagings? I’m now super curious!

      • Nothing extraordinary… Just some times they clog up if the texture/ density etc isn’t right. So annoying to buy something and can’t use it because its clogged up. Nothing to be too worried about, I’m sure Clinique got it right!

        • Lily

Ah darn, I thought it would be something juicy. HAHAHAHA!

  • This sounds great! I’ll have to pick this one up. Zit marks take forever to fade on me as well. So sorry you all got sick! That’s no fun. Me, I’ve been having trouble sleeping again SIGH. I hate when this happens! And I’ve decided to start running again. I’ve been kind of missing it, and can do it at home. There aren’t too many Zumba classes I like in the day time anymore.

Still sick 🙁 Little boy has trouble sleeping, so that means mommy can’t sleep either. I’ve been missing my workout session for 2 weeks already. I’m starting to feel all sorts of weird. I just don’t have the energy. I need to get rid of this pesky cough asap so my life can get back to being normal! Hope you’re getting some sleep in though!

  • Oooh, this one sounds good! I used to like their even better serum back in the day. I’m sorry you guys all got sick – I hope everyone is back in tip top shape again soon!

    • Lily

I hope so too Larie! This cough is very persistent though. The fever is gone, thank goodness… but chesty cough and phlegm = no fun either!

  • I think this dual-action of brighten & soothe is the latest “technology” now…. so cool to hear that this works on your zits!! I’ve not tried any Clinique skincare in forever now…. hope to give this one a try when I run out of my current Shiseido White Lucent!

    • Lily

And honestly, you probably won’t get the chance to try. There will be so many other new things you HAVE to test that it’s impossible to try anything you really want. That’s been happening to me the last few years. I’m sure it’s a blogger thing. LOL!

I have used all the Q10 products from Garnier, Roc, and Clinique. I can’t say for certain it has helped reduce any fine lines on my face, I have very few at age 34.

I have however been using the Somaluxe Firming Lotion (for my face) and I have very few wrinkles and the skin around my eyes is quite supple and taut (although this could just be good genes and nothing to do with the product). The Somaluxe Firming Lotion is not like Roc or Clinque where you have to act like the product is gold dust and use sparingly. . .its a large bottle which I like. It lasts a long time.

    • Lily

It’s great you don’t have any fine lines yet. I think using good skincare regularly and consistently definitely helps. Oh and isn’t it great that you found a more affordable product that works wonders on your skin? Gold!
