Face Primers for Drier Skin / Base

My skin has been going through some changes lately, and I notice that my skin is getting drier. I’m sure this has got to do with aging as well, and I’m also not sure if it’s because of the heatwave and I’m just dehydrated. I try to drink more water, but there’s only this much I can gulp before feeling all bloated! I find that foundations that used to sit well on my skin look weird on me. They just sit on top of the skin looking patchy so I’ve been using foundations that used to look too dewy on me. These look so much better because they make my skin look healthier, not to mention they do not emphasize dry skin.

That’s the case for NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint, and the PR kindly sent me a primer (NARS Pro Prime Multi Protect Primer SPF30) saying that the Skin Tint will sit so much better on top of this primer. She was right! This and Diorsnow Bloom Perfect Brightening Perfect Skin Creator have been doing a great job in making my old foundations sit right on my skin.

I like that these are very light in texture, and I am sure they are silicone based because it smooths out my skin before applying foundation. They both have high SPF and the lighter texture makes it easy to use them even as replacement for your sunscreen. I personally ALWAYS use a sunscreen prior to makeup no matter what and always recommend that, but I know some of you don’t like to pile on products on your face. When I feel lazy, I skip primer and just use my cushion foundations which are on the dewy side. They are kinder to my face, and I’ve been really liking more dewiness and glow for my bases lately. A change in preference, because I used to like demi matte finish. Then again, my skin used to combination oily.

I like that primers can help with our skin condition temporarily, to prep it for the foundation that comes, and in this case, I can still use my old foundations without buying new ones!

What do you do if a certain foundation doesn’t sit right on you anymore? Do you use primers? How do you deal with changing skin condition? About this, I changed my night skincare routine and I’ve been seeing changes. I’ll share that with you in the next post ๐Ÿ™‚

Funny you should say that but I’m going through pretty much the same thing. Balms and oils are my new skincare BFFs. And these go on top of my usual hydration stuff too. But I kinda like it, very pampering and relaxing ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Lily

I’ve been revamping my skincare too. I’ve been using oils and balms as well and my skin definitely looks and feels better. I do wonder if this is going to be how it is moving forward… but once I see bumps here and there, I’d have to cut back ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I have problems like this too sometimes. I don’t usually use a primer though as I really don’t like the feel of them. But I’ve learned that sometimes my moisturizer interferes with my foundations-like if my moisturizer is a water based one but foundation has an oil in it-well oil and water don’t mix! So I’ve been trying to watch for that and it makes a difference for me.

    • Lily

Yes, moisturizers do make a difference! I also think it might be the sunscreen I use. But since I’m too lazy to figure out which goes with what, I just slap on a primer, which I already have in my drawer anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I also get crazy dry in the winter and have to change all my bases, changing primers doesn’t seem to help me and I have to revamp my entire skincare, still figuring it out year to year!

    • Lily

Ah yes. Our skin changes and so does our skincare routine. Primers are just quick temporary fixes ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you’ll figure it out soon!

  • I need the opposite and usually go for pore blurring and mattifying primers.

    • Lily

I used to use those. I still have some larger pores around my nose, but ah, I’m too lazy to use those pore fillers!

  • Definitely primers are the way to go, although it also meant I’ve to get a new bunch of primers cos i used to only use mattifying / oil-control primers. Another thing that’s helped, is to apply a facial oil as the last step of skincare to help the foundation go on better. It’s tricky finding the right oil though, but it’s great once you do!

    • Lily

Oh I’ve been using oils at night, and it’s helped tremendously. I’m still not sure about using oils in the day, but I’ll try!

  • I do own some face primers but I still haven’t found any to suit me. You know they all just sort of sit heavily under my foundation looking blotchy and cracky. Plus they neither make me feel like my make up goes on smoother nor stay on longer. I’m just happy with my current favourite foundation (Armani Maestro Fusion) on it’s own!
Oh, I’m addicted to face oils and I have a feeling THEY make my foundation look better and stay put longer.
With all that said though, I’ve never tried these two that you have here, and the truth is maybe I should give at least one of them a try because the spf is a good idea…

    • Lily

Oh, a friend just commented about using oils. I think you’re already on the right track, Sofia ๐Ÿ™‚

Did you pick up anything from the Sephora sale? I read pretty good things about the Becca primer but I haven’t tried it. Even the Hourglass one, which I thought is for those with combination oily skin? I’m not usually into primers, an extra step in my routine and I’m lazy. But since I have these 2 already sitting in my drawer, I thought I’d try. And they work!

    • Yes! I was a very good girl and only picked up both primers the Becca and Hourglass ones! Actually I only wanted the Becca primer but I had to pick up the Hourglass one so I could do a comparison post between it and the NYX Angel Veil primer because many said it’s a dupe. I only bought the travel size for Hourglass and it costs me $CAD21.00 before tax for only 0.33oz! That’s slightly below 10mL! It better make me shit gold…

      • Lily

Have you tried them Shireen? What are your thoughts? I’m also interested in both these primers!

        • I received the package today and actually washed my makeup so I can put on makeup again with the Becca primer!๐Ÿ˜‚ And I love it!!! I use it with Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua and my skin is so radiant. Literally glowing from within! A little goes a very very veryyy long way so this bottle will last me till kingdom comes. Now I hope I will love the Hourglass primer the same but many said it’s more for oily skin. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

Ah sounds amazing! I wonder if it’s similar to the Chanel one that I have. I was recently sent the Hourglass Veil primer and I tried it on today. I have to say, my skin does look smoother, no dry flakes! I have to test it more, with different foundations ๐Ÿ™‚ But from the first try, it doesn’t poop gold. Hahaha!
