Some Primers I’m Enjoying

Yesterday, I talked about the few concealers I’m enjoying. Today, I’d like to talk about a few face primers I’ve been really liking as well. I have some glow primers / illuminating primers, and a couple of pore fillers / mattifying primers. I have combination normal dry-ish skin and I have enlarged pores around my nose. So I use different primers for different reasons.

Every time I talk about primers, I’d get comments that these are just an extra step in makeup, and they are unnecessary. That, my friends, I agree. In part. A face primer can be an extra step, but if you can’t find a foundation that’s just right for you, texture wise, or if you have to control very oily skin, then a primer might be useful. I use pore fillers around my nose, before foundation because they help smoothen the skin and foundations stay on better if I stay out all day. Do I use it every time I apply foundation? Nope…only when I feel like it. And these are the 2 I like. Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer and Bobbi Brown Skin Smoothing Pore Perfector are the ones I reach for when I know I’ll be out most of the day. I think they are similar in performance, and I prefer the lighter texture of Bobbi Brown, not to mention it is more affordable. Some of my friends who have really oily skin swear by the Hourglass one but I think it is overpriced especially in Malaysia.

As for illuminating / glow primers, I have quite a few I’ve been using regularly. I rotate them so I make use of all of them. Since I’ve been really into dewy skin finish, these primers help me achieve it even without foundation. I like to use these as a base before I apply my concealers. I use a small fluffy brush to lightly blend the concealer in when there’s still some tackiness on my face. That way, the concealers blend better. This is one of the ways I use these primers.

As you can see here, I included the Chanel Huile de Jasmin because I love using it for extra shine. I also mix a drop or 2 to foundations I find are too matte for my liking. It immediately sheers out the foundation and changes the texture to something I prefer. I also sheer out the foundation if the shade doesn’t match completely, because sheerer foundations are more forgiving. The Becca Backlight Priming Filter is my favourite. I bought the full sized product after using up a deluxe sized sample. It doesn’t feel oily or greasy at all, which I think is suitable for all skin types, and it just gives my skin a beautiful warm glow even just on its own. You see that it’s tinted, but it doesn’t give any coverage at all.

The Chanel Le Blanc Multi Use Illuminating Base has been sitting in my drawer, unopened, for the past year. I purchased it before the dewy skin craze, because I was curious, and I’m glad I bought it. I like to mix this with foundations instead of using it on its own. I also like to add a tiny bit on top of my cheeks for a highlighted but never over the top look. It isn’t oily either, and I think even those with oily skin can enjoy this.

Finally, I’ve talked about the Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Balm before, and this one is good if you have really dry skin. I only use this when my skin feels particularly dry, or if I plan to use a thicker foundation. Because this is creamy, I also sometimes mix this with concealer, and use it as a tinted moisturizer.

Why don’t I just buy a foundation with the right texture, you ask? Because it’s difficult. There are only so many foundations I can try. It’s not easy to get samples here either, because the sales people will give me looks if I just walked in and asked for one. LOL! Also, my preferences change from time to time. So does my skin, which is sometimes drier than normal. Then on the few crazy days of the month, my skin gets slightly oilier. So different primers, for me, actually help me use the foundations I already have, despite changing conditions or preferences.

Do you use primers? I never really did because I’d just slap on foundation and go. But now, I appreciate a bare skin look but cheating with some makeup 🙂
